Could someone tell me how much paste I should use when fishing for carp from 3 - 6lbs. I think I am using too much and the fish are just sucking in around the edges and are not taking the hook fully into their mouths. Perhaps (if you know) someone could actually explain what is going on under the water when you fish paste and why sometimes soft paste is better than firm. Could you also tell me how I know when I have the correct consistancy. Could someone also recommend a float for fishing paste in shallow water (2ft and less). I find that many pole floats have too longer a stem for this depth and I may get sued by the carps health and safety advisors for stabbing them in the eye!! Is it necessary to use a dedicated pole float or can any type of float be used?:original:

i was told by someone ages ago- 'a float is just an aid to show a bite indication'. i have used a variety of floats for paste fishing, ranging from 'proper' paste floats to some with only 1" of bristle.
soft paste tends to be in vogue these days as some reckon the fish take it more readily as they are used to feeding over broken down pellets in the margins. the only thing to be careful of when using soft paste is DONT MOVE YOUR FLOAT AT ALL.
i always try to use the biggest hook i am allowed in fishery rules and completely cover it in paste (the smallest lump i use is the size of a hazelnut). i have been known to use a lump the size of a golf ball before, to allow the smaller fish some nibbling before the bigger fish turn up.
dont forget that it always better to match your paste to your feed pellets (use the micro version and tip boiling water over them, cover by approx 2" water in a bait box overnight and job done).
however if you like using a paste mix then you can't beat the Atomic Paste.
regards to consistency, its best to leave that to trial and error to suit your fishing style

Dont want to sound picky but the statement about not moving your float at all is a little bit incorrect concerning soft paste.
It goes something like this.
A few GOT boys GOT together one day and went on what can only be described as a day out to educate a few people on the awsome vesatilty of the Atomic paste. We went to a few shops around the country and proved to all that sloppy paste (Atomic as it is the only paste that you can do the following with) can be fished off the bottom and can be moved with ease with out the fear of it falling off. We demonstarted this in fish tanks and proved that with adding a little Atomic cloud we could infact create a paste that can not be removed from the water due to it being totally saturated (Sloppy) but could be lifted and dropped upto seven times prior to it leaving the hook. We demostaretd this time and time again to all who were shocked to say the least. The force that you apply to the lifting and dropped has GOT to be gauged as you are lifting something that is almost water. It might sound A BIT UNBELIEVABLE but if you would like to try it for yourself you will never fish the paste the same again. Each time you lift the sloppy paste of the bottom you will be amazed at what you see and then you will completely understand why carp just love the Atomic Paste. Hope this helps all a little bit.

If you click on the above link it should if I have done it correctly take you to the video of the Got road show we did at Chiltern Baits and tackle.
It will also introduce you to our very own Simon Edwards (aka Gingernutz) who demonstrates just how versatile the Atomic paste and Atomic cloud can be, for those of you who dont yet know Si feel free to ask his advice for a Ginger he is very switched on:original:
Since the video was first shot we have been working on ways to improve the paste and the cloud and we are somewhere near to the finished article, keep your eyes peeled to the forum for an update Feb time.
Untill then enjoy the video.
Thank you to Andy Pell of Andys Angle for allowing us to show the video here.

With regards to floats for the paste. If you try and use the soft paste for shotting of the float then you will not be able to do what I have shown on the video as the float will pull the hook through the past because the float is constantly trying to lay flat due to its bouancy if you follow me.
